Diaries, 1856-1900.

The diaries consist of 6 notebooks which are logs of the author's routine observations of the planets and stars and which document progress in his significant work on the spectra of stars. One contains notes on the spectra of laboratory sources and another contains clippings and notes from the work of other people in stellar spectroscopy.

Educated at City of London School. After a few years of business he decided to devote himself to astronomy. F. R. A. S. 1854. In 1856 he built an observatory at Tulse Hill and applied to stars the methods of Kirchhofs researches into the chemical constitution of the sun. In conjunction with William Allen Miller (F. R.
